What is a Pennsylvania One Call?

You may hear a fencing company or DIY guide mention Pa1Calls. This call is important to our company because we install hundreds of fences each year, and this simple call ensures we will not cause any damage to underground utilities. For those installing their own fence, this call is necessary to ensure you don’t do any damage as well!

Any persons performing underground work are required by Pennsylvania law, and hopefully by common sense, to contact Pa1Call so that they can notify the owners of underground utilities of the intent to dig in the designated area. The owners of the underground utilities are then able to determine if there are any utilities that need to be considered while digging.

Information required for a Pa1Call:

  • The address, county, and municipality where the work will take place

  • Exactly where the fence will be installed on the property

  • Any information that will help utility companies locate the property. For example: nearest intersections, if it is a corner lot, and if it is in a named community.

How the Utilities will be marked:

Each utility owner will mark underground utilities with either a temporary marking paint or marking flags. The color codes are as follows:

  • Power = red

  • Gas, oil, steam or petroleum = yellow

  • Communication lines = orange

  • Potable water = blue

  • Reclaimed water or irrigation = purple

  • Sewer lines = green

3 business days advance notice needs to be given to the owners of underground utilities to give them time to make the necessary markings.

Don’t forget to call R&S to get an estimate, we can’t wait to talk with you about your project.

We wish you the best with your fence installation, or for the do-it-yourselfers, happy digging!
